AAFMED HELPS CODY

Athe time AAFMED helped Cody, he was a very handsome 6 month old neutered male White German Shepherd. When he first came to ARF's he had a huge pcodyroblem.  While living with his former owners, he broke his leg as a very young puppy and they did not take him to the vet.  So when he was surrendered his leg had "frozen" in place and he was unable to run like a normal dog because the leg was deformed from the break.  The vets said that the "easiest" fix would be to amputate it and he would learn to walk on three legs.  Well, at ARF's we hardly ever take the "easy" way out, so we consulted with a great  orthopedic vet and he said that if we would be able to do the rehabilitation with Cody (six weeks), they could re-break the leg (sounds very painful doesn't it!) and re-set it so that Cody would, being so young, have the best opportunity to grow up with four working legs.  So, despite the expensive surgery,  we decided that this sweet little boy needed ARF's help to give him  the best shot at a long healthy life. We took the dog from the humane society and found a loving foster home where he would be able to recuperate from his surgery.  Four weeks after surgery and Cody was doing wonderfully!  His leg was even growing!  He should only have a slight limp and a small scar, but that won't slow this sweetie down!   He is a healthy and affectionate boy, good with other dogs and friendly with people.   Cody is housetrained, crate trained, loves his squeaky toys, chasing June bugs and maple tree helicopters .....in general he  enjoys walking and playing.  His youth and amiable temperament made him an ideal dog for the people who adopted him.  Cody made a wonderful walking companion .  Cody has also completed some obedience classes with a trainer and loves them!  He learned to fetch and retrieve a ball.    paws
